Volunteers step up to fill the need

ABOUT 150 would-be helpers for asylum seekers gathered at a volunteer information evening in Dandenong last Tuesday.
The event was staged by Asylum Seekers Resource Centre, which has an employment services office in Dandenong.
Manager Rosa Misitano said there was “a lot of love in the room” for the cause but there was also a deep need for help.
“Dandenong is taking a huge, huge load with asylum seekers.
“It’s come to the stage we need to ask if people in other areas can help to share the load.
“There is just so much giving and so much need.”
She said the centre needed qualified or experienced English as a second language tutors, experienced employment advisers, receptionists and administration.
A handy-person was also required for building maintenance and repairs.
Cooks and food donors are also welcome to pitch in for the centre’s planned community meals on Tuesdays.
