Program to reduce overdose

Dandenong Hospital will receive extra help to tackle drug-related harm.
The State Government announced on Tuesday 13 December that from January, peer workers will target communities across Geelong and Melbourne through a trial program.
Six agencies will co-ordinate the initiative to improve access to clean injecting equipment, information and support for those who are disadvantaged and at risk of drug overdose.
Peer workers will draw on local knowledge and experience to identify and support individuals, including those who might not access mainstream supports.
Monash Health will focus on Dandenong.
Harm Reduction Victoria will also receive funding to help co-ordinate the initiative, providing workforce support and training as well as evaluation.
Mental Health Minister Martin Foley said more people died from overdose than the road toll.
“We’ll continue to work to reduce the harm associated with alcohol and drug use,” he said.
“This trial forms an important part of our response to reduce the number of fatal overdoses.
“Peer workers are an important part of Victoria’s harm reduction response, engaging those who might otherwise be disconnected from our mainstream health services.”
