A new artwork is brightening the walk between Dandenong Railway Station and the shopping precinct.
The Martin George bronze sculpture In Transit is in Settlers Square and recognises Dandenong’s role as a distribution hub.
Oversized links of gold chain are stacked on a packing pallet.
The work weighs in at half a tonne. The pallet is forged bronze cast at Meridian in Fitzroy.
George said the work was designed to remind viewers that their fates were shared and that a prosperous future was only possible when a community worked together.
“I chose the pallet as a reference to the area’s industry,” he said.
“Much of Melbourne’s manufacturing takes place in the region and as such, a stacked pallet is an immediate visual cue.”
In Transit is part of Greater Dandenong Council’s permanent public art collection and picks up where George’s previous work Gold Bling left off. It’s in Halpin Square and also features gold chain links.
