DANDENONG Primary School is aiming to close the book on the poverty gap that leaves some Victorian students struggling to afford clothes.
The school held a special fundraiser last Friday for the State Schools Relief Committee, a body that purchases essential clothing such as shoes and uniforms for poor students.
Dandenong Primary School principal David Crozier said the school raised more than $400 with gold coin donations from its 300 students.
He said students in grades prep through to two came dressed in costumes of their favourite book characters to tie in with National Literacy and Numeracy week, too.
Senior students dressed in casual wear as part of the fundraiser.
Later that evening the school had its own fundraiser in the fashion of a school dance.
Mr Crozier said he shook a tambourine as he danced – much to the delight of the 200 students and parents in attendance.
