Grenda’s inspires moving art

A UNIQUE project to commemorate the decommissioning of the former headquarters of Grenda’s Corporation in Dandenong is under way.
Earlier this year the City of Greater Dandenong commissioned photographer Hilton Stone to record the business, workforce and everyday operations at the organisation’s Foster Street site, where it has operated since 1945.
The result is a breathtaking collection of photos that provide rare insights into the culture of the workplace, daily rituals, the connection between staff and the manner in which the business functions.
So inspiring were these photos they prompted the development of a commemorative project concept known as Moved by Grenda’s, which aims to respectfully acknowledge this important phase in the life of Dandenong.
A team of selected artists will be given access to the Grenda’s site after it is decommissioned to create a range of works inspired by the empty grounds and buildings.
This will occur shortly before demolition. The community will then be invited in to view the work to celebrate and reflect on Grenda’s operations from Foster Street.
Moved by Grenda’s is a joint project by Grenda’s Corporation, VicUrban and the City of Greater Dandenong and will launch in January.
