Burra burns Beacy

By Brad Kingsbury
A BIGGER and stronger Keysborough side taught a youth-laden Beaconsfield a 61-point lesson in round one of the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League Casey Cardinia league competition on Saturday.
The Burra proved it would be a top team this year with new coach Greg Siwes’ game plan revolving around faster ball movement into the forward 50-metre arc, together with an awareness of switching play and applying intense and constant pressure.
Keysborough poured on the pressure after an even first quarter to lead by 49 points at half-time and effectively have the match ‘iced’.
Star Burra spearhead Luke McGuinness booted eight goals and gave promising 17-year-old Eagle defender Jim Alexander a bath, while Keysborough teenager Tyson King and veteran Warrick Hanks kicked three goals each.
Siwes praised his side afterwards and said that, while confident, it was good to start with a win.
“We really beat them in one quarter where we got on top and kicked seven goals in a row. Other than that it was a pretty good contest,” he said.
“During the week I expected to get the points but it’s always good to get a win on the board early.”
Centre half back William Gayfer was in good form from the start, along with Noble Park recruit Anthony Brannan and former AFL midfielder Clinton King.
Beaconsfield coach Haydn Robins was measured in his comments, saying his players must learn from the game, but he acknowledged that Keysborough would be one of the better sides in 2007.
