Councils’ drive for transport

JUST one week after the State Government revealed its largest public transport plan, several councils are banding together to fight for improved rail and bus services in Melbourne’s east.
Greater Dandenong council will join Knox, Manningham, Maroondah, Monash, Whitehorse and Yarra Ranges councils in lobbying the State Government for better public transport services.
Greater Dandenong’s mayor Peter Brown said eastern Melbourne residents suffered from poor transport options.
“We have campaigned successfully to get EastLink built and now we are turning our attention to other transport options,” he said.
“Living in the east should not mean you are unable to participate in your community or get home at night or on a weekend.”
Cr Brown said the group, known as the Eastern Transport Coalition (ETC), would launch a campaign targeting bus and train frequencies later this year.
“A better bus system would see increased frequency, 5am to 11pm operating times seven days a week,” he said.
