CITY of Greater Dandenong councillor Paul Donovan said the intersection of Henty Street and Princes Highway in Dandenong ranked as one of the worst he’d seen.
He said last week’s collision at the intersection, which resulted in a car smashing into the front yard of a property, could have easily claimed a life.
He has called on VicRoads to upgrade the intersection before someone is killed.
“You could travel the whole world and you would scarce find an intersection as bad as this one,” Cr Donovan said.
The intersection, located just outside of central Dandenong, provides access from the Dandenong high school to central Dandenong.
All traffic approaching Dandenong central passes through the intersection, as well as traffic for the Dandenong market, Coles supermarket and the railway station. “The intersection is way too busy.
“There are far too many cars moving in too many directions,” he said.
“For the sake of a few simple road signs and possibly one splitter island on Henty Street, VicRoads could significantly improve the safety of this intersection.
“We hope that now the Sate Government has announced $50 million of new funding for the Dandenong CBD some of that money could be used to improve dangerous intersections such as this.
“Someone in the State Government needs to tell VicRoads to wake up, to take the concerns of local communities seriously and to fund necessary improvements to roads.”
At last Monday night’s council meeting, Cr Donovan again called on the council to write to VicRoads and to demand action.
