Activities club gasping for new lease of life

By Shaun Inguanzo
ONE OF Dandenong’s longest-running recreation clubs could fade from existence unless it finds new members.
The Dandenong Life Activities Club is looking for new members to take part in its over 50s social activities.
Club president Bill Gothard said the group was also planning to move from Dandenong Senior Citizens Hall in Langhorne Street because members were finding it difficult to park when patrons were attending the nearby Drum Theatre.
The stable of challenges has not panicked the club and it is now likely to move to the Dandenong North Seniors Club where it already plays carpet bowls.
Mr Gothard said the club started in Dandenong more than 30 years ago and had played a vital role in preventing Dandenong’s aged residents from falling into social isolation.
Mr Gothard said the club included a wide range of activities to cater for all needs, in-cluding watching films, playing cards, dining out and playing carpet bowls.
“When we have card nights we have tea, biscuits and supper at the end of it and we talk,” he said.
“We have a golfing sub-group going, as well as a walking group.
“We have two carpet bowls nights a month, a film night once a month, and a travel night once a month where we show members’ travels on slides and so on.
“But we’re mainly older people.”
Mr Gothard said any new members would be welcomed, including those who would also consider being members of the club’s committee.
