Draw a good result for Cobras

By Melissa Grant
SANDOWN remains on the bottom of the Southern Football League (SFL) Division Three ladder despite registering a draw against eighth-placed South Yarra on Saturday.
Both sides would have left the field feeling empty after slogging out the game in slippery conditions.
Sandown got off to a good start, outscoring the away side five goals to three in the first half.
But South Yarra fought back in the third quarter to edge to within a point of the Cobras at the last change.
The final stanza was an epic battle as the ball was carried from one end of the ground to the other, with each team only managing one goal on the scoreboard.
A few kicks out of bounds on the full cost the Cobras dearly as the Lions levelled the scores.
Adam Maling was best on ground for the Cobras, while Clinton Sheedy and Caleb Love managed to snag three each despite the wet conditions.
Evan Hearity and Lachlan McGregor were the best for the Lions, whose score sheet was headed by Adam Neville with three goals.
Sandown coach Mike Allen said the result was much better than a loss.
“South Yarra won last week so they would’ve been feeling quite confident, but we spoiled their party,” he said.
“It was good to get out with the draw.”
Allen said he was impressed with the way his side began the match.
“We started well, but to their credit they played well in the second half to get back,” he said.
“We tired towards the end but we managed to hold on for the draw.”
Allen said fitness issues and player availability were hurting the side, which has only registered two wins this season.
Despite missing the opportunity to get off the bottom of the ladder, Allen said there were plenty of positives to take into Saturday’s clash against Dandenong.
“We will take a bit of confidence from the (South Yarra) game,” he said.
“We got within seven points of Dandy last time but we know they will be a bit fresh having had last week off.”
Dandenong will be looking to reassert itself after losing to South Yarra by 72 points before having the bye last weekend.
Cerberus v Doveton
Doveton has jumped to fourth place on the SFL Division Three ladder after an impressive 38-point victory against Cerberus on Saturday.
The Eagles started the game well, and despite inaccuracy at goal, took a 24-point lead into the first change.
The away side then extended its lead to 29 points at half-time.
Cerberus fought hard in the last half, but it wasn’t enough with the Eagles recording their sixth win of the season.
Brett Colbert was best for the Eagles, while Michael Gorman and Cameron Van-Nes were also important, booting four and three majors respectively.
Mitch Cers was the best for Cerberus, which had eight individual goal kickers.
Doveton will be looking to further improve its chances of a top-four finish when it travels to South Yarra this weekend.
