A SUDANESE community leader has called for the new Labor Government to be more willing to work with its settling community and to reopen the door to African refugees.
Sudan Liaison Organisation administrative secretary Yien Thiang Luony this week told Star that the Sudanese community had just formed a sole representative committee in Melbourne’s south-east that would work with the new government to achieve better outcomes for both parties.
Mr Thiang Luony said the sole committee would also ensure that representatives attended meetings of refugee settlement services in order to be able to take issues and concerns back to their own communities to work on solutions.
Mr Thiang Luony said he hoped a Kevin Rudd-led government would reopen the door on African migration to Australia after former Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews stopped the flow in October.
“We are hoping to work with the government to bring attention to the difficulties facing our people back home and the need to keep the door open for refugees,” he said
