Wetlands save water

A WETLANDS project in Keysborough began this week and is tipped to save thousands of litres of water each year once the project is complete.
Wachter Reserve’s wetlands project will convert community reserve lakes filled with tap water to reserves filled with stormwater.
The $130,000 project is jointly funded by Greater Dandenong council and the State Government.
Greater Dandenong environmental planner Darren Wilson said the project would not only save water but offer educational opportunities for school children.
“The Wachter Wetlands will also provide excellent storm water and water conservation education for a well used park in the city and improve storm water treatment, flood retention and habitat creation,” he said.
“The wetlands will replace ponds constructed in the early 1970s and filled by drinking water and part of the works will include water sensitive landscaping and educational signage.”
