THE MAYOR’S Fishing Challenge caught the attention of Greater Dandenong residents hook, line and sinker last week.
City of Greater Dandenong mayor John Kelly declared the day a success after he estimated 150 people turned out on Friday 4 April at Dandenong Creek, near the Dandenong Stadium, to fish for fun.
Dandenong retailer Compleat Angler and the Future Fish Foundation provided tips and fishing rods for budding fishers young and old.
”Conservatively, I’d say there were about 150 people there, it was just absolutely brilliant,” Cr Kelly said.
“People caught a couple of carp and some eels, and of course all of the eels were put back into the creek.”
Cr Kelly said Compleat Angler staff deserved praise for helping people new to fishing enjoy their day.
“We also had the Carrum Fishing Club there to assist, the Lions Club had a sausage sizzle, and the council’s outdoor staff had an exhibit of the animals and little creatures you can find in the area,” he said.
“The day was supposed to finish at 2pm, but some people were there until 4.30pm.”
150 find out that fishing for fun has a catch in it!
