$1m drug haul

By Shaun Inguanzo
ILLICIT DRUGS with an estimated street value of $1 million were unearthed in a raid by Greater Dandenong detectives last Sunday morning.
The detectives, who followed a gut feeling, also uncovered a stash of firearms and $400,000 in cash.
Two Greater Dandenong detectives were patrolling in an unmarked car in Keysborough at 1am on Sunday.
Police said the pair became suspicious when a vehicle near Cheltenham Road darted down a side street upon seeing the detectives.
The detectives intercepted the car and found two men inside, along with a stash of drugs and firearms.
After taking the two men for questioning, detectives executed search warrants on homes in Nyallic Court, Keysborough, and Ellis Road, Glen Iris.
During the raid, police said they found drugs, including cocaine, amphetamine and ecstasy, as well as more firearms and $400,000 cash scattered around the Glen Iris home.
Police later arrested Glen Iris residents Stefanos Stefanakos, 27, and Maria Stefanakos, 60, and charged them with trafficking a commercial quantity of drugs and property, and various firearms offences.
Both men appeared before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court last Monday and will reappear for a committal mention on 18 June.
Greater Dandenong Detective Senior Sergeant Terry Kane praised the intuition of his officers.
Det Sen Sgt Kane said the two detectives worked a 24-hour shift that night, displaying their dedication to the job.
“A lot of people don’t realise that when these things start, they don’t finish working until it is over” he said.
“I think the detectives worked something like 24 hours straight.
“They are a very dedicated bunch, the whole office is, and that is the sort of result we get from it.”
