Nissan’s $3m

CAR manufacturer Nissan will spend almost $3 million to develop a technical training and workshop facility in Dandenong.
Nissan wholesales more than 60,000 motor vehicles from the Dandenong site each year and in the face of tough times for the automotive industry in Australia has made a significant $2.7 million investment that shows it is here to stay.
City of Greater Dandenong mayor John Kelly joined Nissan Australia’s managing director and CEO Shinya Hannya to turn the first sod of soil on the project at the Dandenong-Frankston Road site, behind its current plant and headquarters.
“Nissan has been a valued contributor to Greater Dandenong’s economic landscape for more than 30 years and I’m delighted the company has taken this step to bolster its already substantial operations in our city,” Cr Kelly said.
“The Nissan plant provides about 470 jobs and houses the car manufacturer’s Australian headquarters. It’s an important player in our community and we’re delighted it is continuing to grow in the face of tough times for the car industry.”
Mr Hannya said Nissan’s Dandenong investment reflected several factors including the company’s faith in the new vehicle market; the array of new Nissan products about to arrive; and the productive relationship with the Dandenong business community since 1975.
“The new Technical Training and Workshop Facility will build on the product knowledge of our employees and Victorian dealers,” Mr Hannya said.
“It is the first new facility Nissan has commissioned in Australia since 1992 and comes against a backdrop of competitors who are currently disposing of assets.”
The 25,000 square metre facility will house a training centre, service engineering workshop, and vehicle preparation and storage area.
Nissan staff and Nissan dealer employees will receive sales, product, service, and technical training at the centre. Work on the facility is due for completion in April.
