Speeding drivers shock cops

POLICE are outraged at the number of motorists busted for breaking the speed limit on the Monash Freeway near Dandenong and Doveton on the Easter weekend.
Police from the Region Five Traffic Tasking Unit targeted the freeway site, and among the haul busted a biker travelling at 160km/h in the 100km/h zone, and a car driver at 169km/h.
A total of 11 motorists were nabbed for exceeding the 100km/h limit.
Police said motorists were gambling with their lives, with the average speed teetering around the 140km/h mark.
The two speedsters nabbed in the 160km/h range had their vehicles instantly seized, while other motorists copped fines of $285 and four demerit points.
Region Five Traffic Inspector John Heynes said the Easter haul was disappointing.
“People need to understand that speed kills,” he said. “If they think they’ll get away with it, well, then these figures clearly indicate that they won’t.
“The reality is that we are witnessing two possible outcomes of speed – either we get you and you are faced with a fine and possible loss of your car, or worse – and the outcome we all fear – is that someone will lose their life.”
Region Five Assistant Commissioner Paul Evans was at a loss for words and said he could not believe that motorists continually broke the law despite news reports of speed-related fatalities over the weekend.
