IS LOCAL, is good, according to the Walker Street Gallery.
While many may be more familiar with the names van Gogh, Picasso and Da Vinci, Greater Dandenong residents can this month familiarise themselves with the names Biram and Mahoney.
Peter Biram and Peter Mahoney are both outstanding local artists who were winners at the 2007 Frankston Arts Centre’s 6 Degrees art competition.
The Walker Street Gallery in central Dandenong is holding an exhibition to honour the achievements of these two artists and to help catapult their work into the limelight.
Greater Dandenong’s visual and community arts coordinator Cathy van Ee said the 6 Degrees art competition gave the winners the opportunity to exhibit a body of their work at the Walker Street Gallery to further their careers.
“Both are outstanding artists,” Ms van Ee said.
“Peter Biram’s strong luscious oil paintings on canvas have bright application of colour drawing inspiration from the Australian bush.
“His loose yet sophisticated style explores the theme of land ownership and usage within an environmental framework. Peter Mahoney weaves magic into his elaborate paintings that will enchant you. As you explore the detailed works of Mahoney’s landscapes they emerge into the shape of human figures and birds with a poetic language that challenges the way you see reality and form. These captivating works are painted in acrylic on canvas.”
The works of Biram and Mahoney are on display at Walker Street Gallery until end of February.
Walker Street Gallery is located on the corner of Walker and Robinson streets, Dandenong.
