Exhibition sheds light on nature

GLOW is the latest collection of works by artist Birgit Verhagen.
With light the common theme throughout all her works, Verhagen has brought two distinctly different subjects together for one exhibition. Glow combines the artistic portrayal of the marine environment with images of African wildlife in their natural habitat.
City of Greater Dandenong public programs and exhibitions officer Angela Costigan said the exhibition combined abstract impressions, action shots and unusual portraiture.
“Verhagen was inspired by the luminescence, colour and form of jellyfish at the Melbourne Aquarium and began exploring the possibility of an underwater series,” she said.
“This strength of light is also followed through in the artist’s African wildlife works, where attention to fine detail is given free rein.”
Ms Costigan said Glow was a “truly remarkable collection of works”.
“Glow is one of the most striking exhibitions we have had at Heritage Hill to date,” she said.
“The way the artist uses pastels throughout the exhibition is just extraordinary.”
Glow will be on display at Heritage Hill Museum and Historic Gardens, 66 McCrae Street, Dandenong, until Wednesday 18 June. The gallery is open Wednesday to Friday and Sunday from noon to 4pm.
