Kids dig in to engineering

STUDENTS from Dandenong High School visited Tynong Quarry last week to learn more about civil engineering.
They joined students from the Hallam Campus of Eumemmerring Secondary College on the Teens of Steel Career Adventure Day, hosted by the South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) Local Community Partnership (LCP) team.
Tynong Quarry was the highlight of the day with students visiting other sites in Melbourne’s south east.
SELLEN LCP coordinator Alex Palazzolo said the program was designed to inform students in years nine to 12 about the opportunities available within the civil construction industry.
“Students are able to visit various sites undergoing major construction, see the planning that is involved and are made aware of the benefits of the project to the general community,” he said.
Mr Palazzolo said the day was also designed to inform students about civil construction and the pathways and job opportunities that exist due to the industry experiencing severe skill shortages.
For further information regarding the industry or other tours scheduled for 2008 call the SELLEN LCP staff on 9706 8711.
