Abstract art has a visible passion

THE Abstractions II exhibit is the artistic result of combining a Cypriot and a spatula.
Mont Albert-based and Cyprus-born painter George Petrou will provide a colourful spectrum at the Walker Street Gallery in April.
His exhibition will feature 35 works representing his ability to use a variety of painting techniques – with a spatula favoured over a paintbrush.
Gallery coordinator Cathy van Ee said Abstractions II would represent two years of Petrou’s work.
“George has always wanted to paint and in the past two years has devoted an increasing amount of his time to art rather than graphic design,” Ms van Ee said.
Mr Petrou said the exhibit would be a visual wonderland for art enthusiasts.
“In recent years I have found my preferred style with bold colours, the use of both oils and acrylics and often other organic materials, which give my works a blend of surfaces and textures,” he said.
“I think it’s a matter of expressing your own thoughts. The most exciting time for me is when I begin a new work. I have no idea where it will go or where my thoughts will take me and when I’ll finish.
“Painting is my inner passion, and although I devote several hours each day to it in my Mont Albert studio, I am enjoying my escape from the fairly defined limitations of graphic art for advertising or printed materials.”
Mr Petrou’s works were first shown last year at the Yering Station winery in the Yarra Valley, which led to an invitation to Walker Street Gallery in Dandenong.
“George also believes that art must have a social conscience, and will be supporting the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation with a donation from his exhibition sales on the opening night,” Ms van Ee said.
Abstractions II will run from 1 to 26 April with the official opening at 6.30pm on Thursday 3 April.
