ONE of central Dandenong’s busiest car parks has undergone a colourful transformation.
The Thomas Street multi-deck car park has become a focal point for temporary art installations, one titled Luminously Inspiring Fabulous Travel (LIFT), and the other a colourful stencil wall design.
The City of Greater Dandenong’s revitalising central Dandenong place manager Jenny Pemberton-Webb said LIFT was a temporary installation highlighting the works of emerging public artist Clare McCracken, while local artist Ashley Nolan had cleverly created the wall design which can be seen from the entrance to the car park and lift.
“LIFT offers users of Thomas Street car park a new and visually alluring elevator ride where contrasting colours and patterns encourage the passenger to relax and forget the standard anxieties that occur when entering an elevator,” she said.
“Something more sinister is at play on closer inspection of Ashley Nolan’s seemingly peaceful wall painting. Two love birds – blinded by love – haven’t noticed that they are being preyed upon by a nearby cat.”
Greater Dandenong mayor John Kelly said the artworks were designed to add to the Dandenong experience.
“The artworks brighten up the car park and hopefully that will put people into a great frame of mind when doing business in central Dandenong,” he said.
“More than 400 cars a day use the Thomas Street multi-deck car park, which caters for more than 2000 visitors, residents and workers on a weekly basis.”
