IF WE’RE all pawns in a big game of chess, then there’s no time like the present to learn more about the game.
Noble Park Chess Club is hoping to attract new members to its wings this month to capitalise on its already-booming status.
The club rose to fame after December’s Dandenong International Chess Festival, which attracted international and national players to Noble Park.
Next month the chess club will host the inaugural Noble Park Chess Championships.
The club meets every Saturday at 2pm at the Paddy O’Donoghue Centre, Buckley Street, Noble Park.
Publicity officer Domagoj Dragicevic said the club welcomed beginners and experts, and was known for its strong pool of experienced players who could pass on information to chess newcomers.
It is one of the strongest chess clubs in Victoria, featuring an International Master, Women’s International Master and two World Chess Federation Masters.
“While the majority of club members are local, there are members who travel from as far as Deer Park,” Mr Dragicevic said.
“The club is hoping to get more members in the near future.”
Those interested in becoming a member of the club can contact Mr Dragicevic on 0421 896 365, preferably after 7pm.
