A NEW showerhead exchange project has begun in Dandenong.
The Dandenong Community Advisory Board (DCAB) and South East Water have joined forces to help water conservation by exchanging old showerheads for new water-efficient ones in an effort to save millions of litres of water.
South East Water is donating $3 to the DCAB for each showerhead exchanged.
DCAB manager Carol Drummond said funds from the showerhead exchange program had been used to buy school shoe vouchers, supermarket vouchers and other basic items for struggling families.
“One family couldn’t afford to send their eldest child to the first day at secondary school because they couldn’t afford the school uniform. The DCAB were able to help this family so that the student could start school the next day,” she said.
South East Water acting chief executive officer Kate Vinot said she was delighted the company could work with the DCAB to promote water conservation and at the same time provide valuable funds for those in need.
“Water efficient showerheads are easy to install and can reduce a household’s water use by up to 20,000 litres each a year,” Ms Vinot said.
About 30 per cent of all household water is used in the bathroom.
“We are aiming to exchange 82,000 showerheads across our supply region by the end of June,” Ms Vinot said.
Showerheads can be exchanged at the DCAB, 186 Foster Street, East Dandenong, on Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 4pm.
