PANCAKES are the latest weapon in the war against the problem of poverty.
The UnitingCare Pancake Day will run throughout February, giving schools, residents, businesses and community groups the choice of which day will be their special pancake fundraiser.
City of Greater Dandenong Lyndale Ward councillor Sue Walton encouraged the community to jump aboard the pancake platform and register to receive their pancake kit.
Money raised from selling pancakes will help give the poorest people in Victoria and Greater Dandenong a hand-up in their struggle against increasing rent and transport costs.
“If there is a better excuse to eat pancakes, I haven’t heard it,” Cr Walton said.
“I hope the people of Greater Dandenong will take this cause on board and hold a pancake-themed event any time throughout February.
“The first 1500 schools, businesses and community groups to register their event with UnitingCare will receive a free Pancake Day Party Pack with everything needed to get their day started, including bottles of pancake shake and maple flavoured syrup.”
UnitingCare Pancake Day director David Hickey said people could support the worthy cause by holding an event on 5 February, or any time throughout February.
“Housing issues are rife around the nation, in capital cities and regional areas,” Mr Hickey said.
“On any given night around 100,000 people are homeless in Australia including adults, the aged, young people and families with children.
“The high cost of housing is forcing rents up and many low income earners are forced to spend 50 per cent of their after-tax wage on rent.”
UnitingCare helps more than 1.8 million people across Australia every year.
To register an event, go to www.pancakeday.com.au or freecall 1800 060 543.
