YUNG Jun Taekwondo star Michael Nguyen gave his mum a one-of-a-kind present earlier this month.
The 11-year-old Dandenong resident won a gold medal in the under-28 kilogram black belt division at the Victorian Junior Winter Open on Mother’s Day, and capped off a remarkable day of results for his taekwondo club.
Yung Jun Taekwondo, based in Springvale, entered 11 junior fighters in the state tournament, held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, and returned with nine gold, one silver and one bronze medal.
Eleven entrants for 11 medals is a strike rate of which to be proud.
Senior instructor Yoshiko Kera said Nguyen fought with amazing spirit.
“Michael really displayed his skills,” she said.
“It was a brilliant fight and to win a gold medal was such a wonderful present to his mum on Mother’s Day.”
Nguyen, a grade six student at Wooranna Park Primary School, is now focused on success at the Australian national championships in Adelaide in September.
