GREEK Australian senior citizens in Melbourne’s south-east suburbs kicked off a campaign to attract new members to their club this week by hosting a special luncheon with councillors from Greater Dandenong and Monash.
The Greek Senior Citizens’ Parish of Saint Athanasios, based at the church of the same name in Springvale, has about 250 members but is looking to expand.
President Xina Axarlis said the club was attached to the Greek Orthodox Church and provided a social outlet for older Greek Australians, many of whom attended church services.
“Our club has been running for the last six years but it’s always nice to have a good relationship with councils of the cities where our members are from,” Ms Axarlis said of Tuesday’s luncheon.
“Some Greeks are really religious, especially the oldies.
“They have a service every Tuesday between 9am and 10am and then afterwards they come to us.”
Ms Axarlis said the club offered activities, day trips and other social functions with the view of preventing older members of the Greek community from falling into social isolation.
“When they come in we serve tea, coffee, biscuits, cakes, whatever,” she said.
“We have volunteers who cook hot meals every Tuesday, and our members pay just $4.”
To express interest in joining the club phone Xina Axarlis on 0409 546 849.
