DON’T tackle climate change sitting down – that’s the message from the Australian Greens this election.
And to prove their point, a handful of party members including Isaacs candidate Colin Long set up a dining table at Mordialloc beach to show the effects of climate change on the lives of Australians if left untreated.
Water swept up to their ankles and under the table in what Mr Long said was a highlight of rising sea levels as the global climate warmed.
More specifically, he said rising water levels for Isaacs residents living beach side would be the result of bay dredging.
“Climate change and bay dredging are linked,” Mr Long said.
“Global warming is causing sea level rise, water temperature increases and more violent storms.
“The best way to protect marine environments from these threats is to ensure they are in the best possible condition and subject to minimum stress.
“Dredging the bay is precisely the wrong thing to do given what we know about the growing environmental and climate crisis.”
