MISS Brook returned to her scintillating best at Sandown Park last week, devastating her rivals in the fastest heat of the Group 3 Lizrene Classic.
The reigning Queensland Greyhound of the Year began only fairly from box 7 before weaving her way through the field to be third entering the straight the first time around during the Thursday night event.
From there Miss Brook ($2.10) was never in danger, sweeping past early leader Glenavon Heather ($54.70) and extending her lead to 7.5 lengths at the line, with favourite Bomber Que ($2) a further 2.25 lengths adrift.
Her time of 42.15 seconds was the fastest run over the Sandown Park 715m this year.
The run was Miss Brook’s fourth since returning from a broken metacarpal in October last year.
Before breaking down, she won the Group 2 Sir John Dillon Memorial at the Lightwood Road circuit in 42.35 seconds, and her run last week was a clear sign she had returned to her best.
In an ominous sign for the bitch’s rivals, trainer Paul Felgate believes Miss Brook will be improved following the run.
Cash In Transit proved too strong for recent City of Greater Dandenong winner Sky Hazzard to take out the second heat.
The winner ($6.80) took the lead shortly after the first turn and was soon joined by Sky Hazzard ($1.90F).
The pair then raced away from the field, Cash In Transit maintaining his narrow advantage throughout the run to salute in 42.32, half a length clear of Sky Hazzard and six lengths clear of Infinite Charm ($10) in third.
Kibble Kruncha ($1.80) overcame considerable interference to power to the line and win her heat in 42.65 seconds.
The Sydneysider was kept in a pocket on the rails for most of the run, however once a gap opened up she pounced to the lead to win by 4.5 lengths from Glenavon Helen ($3.80).
The Lizrene Classic was first run as a bitches-only sprint in 1992.
In 2002, the race became an open 715m race and was elevated to Group status.
It was moved from December to April the following year, and has since served as the lead-up race to Australia’s premier distance event, the $86,000 Group 1 Radio Sport 927 Sandown Cup.
The $29,000 Group 3 Lizrene Classic final will be run at Sandown Park tonight.
