AN impressive knock from Dandenong Panthers all-rounder James Pattinson has failed to prevent Australia from bowing out of championship contention in the Under 19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia.
Pattinson, 17, provided the only legitimate resistance to the top-seeded Pakistanis in Monday’s quarter-final, scoring an unbeaten 34 from 57 balls as the Aussies were dismissed for just 129.
He then took the new ball for Australia, recording figures of 0/30 from his six overs.
Earlier, Pattinson’s Dandenong team-mate Kumar Sarna (12) fell victim to promising Pakistani seamer Adil Raza (3/26), edging one behind just as the Australians looked to recover from a disastrous start with the bat.
The Aussies were seeded to meet the tournament favourites after losing their final group match against Sri Lanka on Friday – a game in which Pattinson (0/23) struggled with the ball and Sarna did not take part.
Saturday’s quarter-final loss means Australia will now take on Bangladesh today (Thursday), with the winner progressing to play either England or Sri Lanka in the third-place play-off on Saturday.
