Pet registrations due

GREATER Dandenong residents have until 10 April to register or renew registration for their pets.
The council’s regulatory services manager, Peter Shelton, said pet registration was important for a number of reasons, especially if people lost their cats or dogs.
“If your cat or dog has its tag on and has managed to escape, our rangers will try to return it before taking it to the pound,” Mr Shelton said.
“Alternatively, if your pet is impounded you will be notified.
“The funds raised by registration allow the council to look after leash-free areas, provide the resources for our animal education programs, and continue dealing with stray, abandoned and unwanted animals.”
Registration fees also fund services such as the council’s response to reports of wandering pets, barking dogs, nuisance cats and more.
Registration fees are $81 per dog and $54 per cat.
This reduces to $27 per dog and $18 per cat if it is either desexed, microchipped or more than 10 years old.
Pensioners also receive a half price discount.
Failing to apply for registration or renewal can lead to an infringement notice being issued, with a penalty of $210 per animal.
