A 23-YEAR-OLD Dandenong North man was slashed across the face with a knife during an assault in Hawthorn on Saturday night.
Police have released images of the man’s facial wounds to prompt people with information about the incident to come forward and help with the investigation.
Police believe the man left a nightclub on Glenferrie Road with a friend just before midnight on Saturday night to withdraw cash from the nearby 7-Eleven convenience store.
Police said an unidentified man approached the pair as they neared the store and tried to pick a fight.
The Dandenong North man used the ATM and left, ignoring the taunts from the stranger who then began to follow the pair.
Police said that as the pair neared an arcade leading to Glenferrie Railway Station the unknown man punched the Dandenong man in the face, leaving a cigarette burn below his right eye.
Police said he then produced a cutting knife, similar to a Stanley knife, and slashed at the Dandenong North man’s face.
The attacker fled on foot in an unknown direction.
The 23-year-old was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital for treatment to an 8cm slash wound below his left eye to his mouth.
Police do not have a description of the offender.
