Seniors cross the floor

By Shaun Inguanzo

DANDENONG senior citizens were given a guided tour of Parliament House in Melbourne this month.
As many as 18 members of the Dandenong National Seniors group braved the cold on 12 June to venture in to the Spring Street building and learn more about the city’s parliamentary history.
After an obligatory photo on the steps of Parliament, and a thorough security check, tour guide Richard took the curious seniors around the building to show off its heritage.
Dandenong National Seniors secretary Lyn Bishop said the group learned much about the building’s history.
“We visited both houses of Parliament and heard stories about the origins, cost, building time, and several stories about some of the characters in Parliament over the years,” she said.
“Our president, Kay Moran, then proceeded to take the Speaker’s Chair in the Lower House, whilst several of our numbers ‘crossed the floor’ just for the hell of it.”
The seniors then enjoyed an afternoon tea in Parliament’s dining room.
A few Devonshire teas later, Mulgrave MP Daniel Andrews arrived to chat with the seniors and share his knowledge about State and local issues.
“From all reports, everyone had a great time and was very impressed with Daniel,” Ms Bishop said.
“He seems very knowledgeable about various State and local issues and has already been given several portfolios in only his second term in Parliament.”
