DANDENONG’S Drum Theatre is rolling out the red carpet for Australian tenor David Hobson’s one-off show, One Voice, on Friday 4 April.
David is one of Australia’s best-known operatic performers and has made appearances on television shows such as It Takes Two and Dancing with the Stars.
In an interview with the Star, David Hobson said he performed many different genres from classical, opera and pop to Broadway movies.
David said his One Voice show would be a journey of all the different genres he sings.
“I’ll be telling my story through the songs. Every time you sing, you reveal a little of yourself,” he said.
“And strangely enough, I find I’m revealing more as I’m getting older.”
David said to keep on singing in Australia, as difficult as it sometimes is, he had to be versatile.
“I take each project as it comes up. If I like it I’ll take it,” he said.
Speaking of his experiences on Dancing with the Stars, David said he was insanely busy as he was also recording an album.
“I’m actually a little surprised we made it as far as we did,” he said.
David said he was impressed with the Drum Theatre.
“Last year’s audience was great, they even lined up at the end of the show, all wanting me to do some cd signings,” he said.
David’s backing band for One Voice is comprised of two keyboard players, a percussionist, a base player and a cello player.
“I’m also bringing a young supreme opera singer from Melbourne, Jackie Porter, who represents the Victorian Opera,” he said.
The show will go for a couple of hours and will include covers and original songs.
“I’m going to give the audience a mixture of what they expect from me. Some opera and also some of the things they have seen me do on television.”
David sings and composes because he just simply loves it.
“When you know you’re meant to do something, you just know it and I know this is what I’m meant to do,” he said.
David has been professionally singing for 25 years and said he would sing for as long as people want him to sing.
Some career highlights for David would include singing at the AFL grand final and singing for the queen at Parliament House.
“Every time I sing it’s a highlight.”
David’s inspiration comes from his family.
“My inspiration comes from my two children aged seven and nine.”
The Drum Theatre manager Paul Streefkerk said tickets were selling extremely well for David’s One Voice show.
“We’re confident it will be a sell out and we’ll have a full house on the night,” Mr Streefkerk said.
This will be David’s second performance at the Drum Theatre.
His last show was part of the theatre’s Encore series.
“His past shows have been outstanding,” Mr Streefkerk said.
“He is extraordinarily talented and has a marvellous ability to connect with an audience.”
David is currently touring eastern metropolitan venues with his One Voice show.
