CHILDREN’S author Sherryl Clark was one of the successful writers who spoke to children at Springvale Library this week as part of the City of Greater Dandenong’s Words Take Flight program.
Under the program, students are given an insight into the creative process behind the written word through a series of talks and writing workshops that will stimulate an interest in books and ideas.
City mayor Youhorn Chea said hundreds of schoolchildren had already participated in the program, now in its 10th year.
“Words Take Flight is a fascinating and entertaining program of author talks, writers’ workshops, storytellers and performances at venues across Greater Dandenong, “ Cr Chea said.
“The program encourages students to develop their own literary skills and provides an opportunity to meet successful authors and illustrators.”
On Friday, Ms Clark spoke to groups of grade two and three students at Springvale Library.
Ms Clark has written more than 20 books for children and teenagers since 1996, including the popular Aussie Bites, Aussie Nibbles and Aussie Chomps series.
Illustrator Corrine Fenton also visited the Springvale Library on Wednesday to speak to grade five and six students, focusing on her book Queenie: One Elephant’s Story.
Ms Fenton showed illustrations from the book as well as historical photographs.
