Insults fly in battle for seats

By Melissa Meehan
THE fight to become Greater Dandenong’s next team of councillors is on – and it appears that the gloves have come off.
Allegations of racism and religious slurs are rife among candidates, not to mention bickering between political affiliations.
One candidate told the Star that she had heard whispers of candidates telling community members that a Muslim woman should not be in power.
“It is disgusting that people have the audacity to bring religious beliefs into the debate,” she said.
“As a multicultural society, it shouldn’t matter what religious beliefs the candidate has as long as they work for the community.”
A leaked email has also revealed candidates plans to lock out other candidates from future funding if they should not get into council.
The email states “what he does not realise is that if any of us win, should he ever contact us for help as we have done in the past at quite some cost to council he will be told to get stuffed”.
It seems the murky hands from beneath the gloves have been revealed and it is bound to make an interesting couple of weeks before the election.
