The 85-year old said it was important to him that he sign up to serve his country during World War II.
With the help of his mother, he joined the army when he was 18.
“My mum signed a form saying I was 18, and I was allowed to join,” Mr James remembered.
He served in New Guinea as a gunner in a heavy artillery unit in 1942 and 1943.
During his time he suffered air raids, but was lucky to return to Australia alive.
Some of his mates weren’t so lucky, coming under attack by the Japanese while fighting at Milne Bay.
The long-time member of Dandenong RSL said Remembrance Day was an important time to pay tribute to those who fought and lost their lives in the war.
Residents are invited to attend Dandenong’s Remembrance Day service which will be held at the Pillars of Freedom on Clow Street at 11am on 11 November.
