Bridge link starts

DANDENONG residents had a sneak preview of the artwork, which will grace the new George Street Bridge in 2010.
The work is based on historical images of the former Dandenong livestock market, which was located at the site of the new bridge for 40 years.
Dandenong MP John Pandazopoulos launched the artwork concept last week.
“Sepia tones and texture have been used to signify the native grasslands,” he said.
“Lightweight synthetic panels featuring market scenes will be mounted on both sides of the new bridge and provide locals and visitors with a historically-inspired gateway into central Dandenong.”
Mr Pandazopoulos said works for the George Street Bridge were on schedule and it was expected to be completed late 2010.
“The structure is starting to take shape with foundations and bridge approaches now well-advanced.”
The new bridge will feature a two-way road for drivers, a shared bicycle and pedestrian path on the station-side, a pedestrian path on the other side and street lighting.
When completed, the bridge will connect people and services on each side of the railway line.
“This new gateway will take pressure off other entry points, making the town centre more accessible for people living, working and shopping in the area,” Mr Pandazopoulos said.
“By creating a more connected road network in central Dandenong, we’re helping to make Dandenong a more livable city.”
The $29.5 million project is part of the Victorian Government’s Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative, a partnership between VicUrban and the City of Greater Dandenong aimed at rejuvenating the city centre.
