MORE than 100 members of Curves Gym in Dandenong North put a spin to their workout to celebrate Shrove Tuesday, or International Pancake Day.
In partnership with Dandenong Pancake Parlour, Curves members tossed pancakes into the air while sweating through their daily workout.
The quirky event stemmed from the Ladies’ Pancake Tossing Race at Olney, Buckinghamshire, England which has been held since 1445.
Shrove Tuesday celebrates the day before the beginning of Lent.
Traditionally, families eat rich foods before fasting begins. The popularity of eating pancakes on this day caused Shrove Tuesday to be commonly known as Pancake Day.
Curves Dandenong North Owner Kristine McDonough said members burned extra calories and had a laugh during the event.
“They had an absolute ball and were laughing while they did it, which burns extra calories,” she said.
“We also had a pancake flipping competition and one member did 71 flips in 30 seconds.”
Ms McDonough said this was the first year Curves in Dandenong North has teamed up with Pancake Parlour in Dandenong and she hoped to hold the same event next year.
“We try to work with local businesses,” she said.
“We would absolutely do it again next year.”
