Hostel at heart of change

THE history of refugees and migrants at the Enterprise Migrant Hostel was celebrated with the launch of a new website on Tuesday.
About 120 people honoured the heritage of the Springvale area and were first to see the new website detailing the story of Springvale’s Enterprise Migrant Hostel.
The hostel was open from 1970 to 1992 and provided accommodation and settlement services to more than 30,000 migrants and refugees from all around the world.
In May 2000 the renovated hostel was re-opened as Lexington Gardens retirement village.
Project co-ordinator Merle Mitchell said a group of community people three years ago felt that the history of the hostel and the community’s response should be documented.
The new website pays tribute to the many thousands of people who passed through the hostel and also to those in the wider Springvale community who welcomed them so warmly.
