THE Division One Springvale White Eagles have played out a 0-0 draw with Clifton Hill to retain their position on top of the ladder.
Last Monday night’s draw keeps Springvale a game ahead of the pack but prior to this match Springvale had suffered three consecutive losses that threatened to knock off the once indestructible White Eagles.
Dandenong City was on the wrong end of two own goals that gifted the Casey Comets a 4-2 Division Two win at Jack Thomas Reserve.
Playing its home game on Berwick City’s main pitch because of the poor playing conditions at Frank Holohan Reserve, Dandenong kicked out to an early lead but had its good work spoiled by two unfortunate own goals.
The Southern Stars have convincingly beaten Berwick City 4-0 at Ross Reserve to set up a tantalising encounter next week against the Casey Comets.
Irish import Alan Mulcahy booted two goals as the undefeated Stars prepare to take on the inform team of the competition next Saturday.
Heatherton United has also found form in the second half of the season with its 1-1 draw against Diamond Valley at home adding to its growing list of upsets.
Before last week Diamond Valley was three points behind the Stars in Division Two but dropped back two points after running into a red-hot Heatherton.
Of the six games played since the mid-season break in June, Heatherton has only lost to the Stars and Comets. In Division Three South Springvale and Noble Park both had reassuring wins.
South Springvale snapped a two game losing streak with a 3-1 win over Brandon Park at Warner Reserve that keeps it in the top two by a point.
Noble Park beat Nunawading 1-0 at Mahoney’s Road Reserve after the only goal for the match came from a decision by the central referee to overrule an offside call by the linesperson.
Noble Park’s Namanja Salamandic was originally called offside by the linesperson but after a brief consultation between the two referees Salamandic was granted the goal.
Croydon City Arrows were too good for Springvale City handing it a 2-1 loss at Dorset Recreation Reserve.
