A PROPOSAL to transform a section of Warner Reserve in Springvale into a housing development could generate more than $6 million to be put towards infrastructure upgrades.
Greater Dandenong Council is considering subdividing a section of the reserve to include 33 lots, with a mixture of detached and terrace housing. However, they are awaiting feedback from local residents.
The housing development would be on the southern boundary of the park and incorporate an area of public open space along the southern side of the creek.
Pending the outcome of the Warner Reserve Concept Plan, the existing dog off-leash area may be relocated to the northern side of Mile Creek.
The council will be having consultation meetings with about 900 surrounding Warner Reserve residents and are seeking feedback from the rest of the community about the potential redevelopment.
The consultation process is expected to last until Christmas.
Greater Dandenong’s Development services director Mal Baker said the proposal reflected current residential development standards.
“This proposal is aimed at delivering a high quality housing development that respects and responds to the overall character and natural features of the reserve and the existing residential nature of the area,” he said.
“The layout of the development will also improve the overall appearance, safety and amenity of the park.”
Greater Dandenong mayor Jim Memeti said the funds generated would assist the council in building the new pavilion at Warner Reserve, as well as other improvements to the north and south of Mile Creek.
“It will also assist with upgrading the existing infrastructure and sports facilities at the reserve,” he said.
He urged residents to voice their opinions about the proposed redevelopment to council.
“Most of the time our council listens to what people want,” he said.
“That’s good governance.”
