Rohingya support
Students at Springvale’s Minaret College are raising awareness for the Rohingya Muslims who are suffering in Myanmar.
It was the first project the school’s Be the Change Committee initiated.
Committee members distributed purple-coloured ribbons to students and staff and female students wore purple-coloured scarves instead of their usual white ones to further spread the message.
Myanmar’s military has driven more than 620,000 Rohingya Muslims out of the country in a move the United Nations has labelled ethnic cleansing.

Faiths in Christmas
A Muslim councillor and a Jewish councillor joined forces to create a Christmas competition at the Monday 11 December Greater Dandenong Council meeting.
Cr Jim Memeti got support from Cr Roz Blades for a motion to have Mayor Youhorn Chea judge properties decorated with Christmas trim and award $1500 each to the best-looking home and shop front.
Submit details and a photo to greaterdandenong.com/christmascomp by 5pm on Thursday 21 December for a chance to win.

Scoot scooter
Dandenong police responded to several calls of an elderly man driving a motorised scooter on Frankston-Dandenong Road in peak hour on Wednesday 6 December.
Members caught up with 89-year-old Timi, who was trying to make his way to Patterson Lakes.
They contacted his family and organised a taxi for the rest of his journey, and he assured them he’d stick to the footpath in future.

Drive out foxes
A fox was seen sitting in councillor Zaynoun Melhem’s driveway “with a loaf of bread” in its mouth.
Cr Melhem told Greater Dandenong Council’s Monday 11 December meeting that other residents of the Rosewood Downs area of Dandenong North had also reported fox sightings, and that he’d spotted two others himself.
Duck, rabbit and guinea pig pets have also fallen victim to the vermin.
The council will look into what it can do to control the problem.

What’s in a name
Tatterson Park’s new pavilion is now complete, and is a step closer to getting a name.
Greater Dandenong councillors voted to officially endorse Ian Tatterson Pavilion at their Monday 11 December meeting following community consultation.
They’ll now forward the suggestion to the Office of Geographic Names for final approval.
Ian Tatterson was the City of Springvale CEO from 1984 until his death in a plane crash in June 1992.
He was CEO when the council bought the land now known as Tatterson Park on Cheltenham Road in the late 1980s.
The $11.6 million pavilion project includes a synthetic soccer pitch which is due to be completed next March.
