Hearts warm to Hot and Cool

Now that spring has sprung and thoughts of summer are not too far distant, staff at Heritage Hill Museum and Historical Gardens, off McCrae Street, Dandenong, are hosting another series of Hot and Cool free outdoor live music performances.
Between October and March, people attending outdoor entertainment at the Hill are encouraged to enjoy a picnic in the historic rose garden while listening to an eclectic mix of music.
Hot and Cool is held on the first Sunday of the month between noon and 3pm.
November’s line-up includes experimental pop group Cold Hands Warm Heart and Hello Satellites.
In December enjoy Tenzin and Taro perform Tibetan music and vocals.
Hot and Cold is not held in January, but will resume in the new year in February.
While at Heritage Hill explore Chris Hutchinson’s exhibition, Figuratively Speaking, which runs until 3 November.
Hutchinson’s work captures elements of beauty through sculpture, etchings, woodcuts, engravings, photographs and paintings, whether in abstracted or stylised representations of the human form.
The current artist in residence at Heritage Hill is Kitty Owen.
Kitty was the creative force behind a delightful paste-up installation in the Heritage Hill gardens, where she took historic photos of children at picnics, in school groups and brass bands, and invited them into the gardens, as tiny spirits.
The photographs were sourced from collections held by the Dandenong and District Historical Society and Heritage Hill Museum and Historic Gardens.
For more information contact Heritage Hill on 9793 4511, email heritagehill@cgd.vic.gov.au or go to www.heritagehill.com.au.

SCHOOL READY
Being ever mindful of today’s youth being the future adults of its progressive city, the City of Greater Dandenong’s busy and forward thinking youth services team has developed a transitions pilot program for grade six students transitioning to year seven.
A recent survey revealed that many young people are at risk of disengaging from school.
The council’s early intervention approach aims to increase protective factors and to reduce vulnerability in young people.
Young people transitioning from primary to secondary school are supported through counselling and support services from Greater Dandenong’s youth services team.
Family counselling sessions are also available.

FAMILY DAY CARE
Did you know that in addition to its many services for young people, the City of Greater Dandenong also offers family day care?
The service provides flexible child care for children and babies through to young people aged 12.
The service is comprehensive and includes before and after school care as well as school holiday care.

FILM FESTIVAL
The City of Greater Dandenong is seeking submissions for its March 2014 film festival Adventures in Cultural Diversity.
The council is looking for short films of all genres which highlight the cultural, linguistic and religious diversity of its residents.
More information can be obtained by logging onto www.greaterdandenong.com.
The deadline for submissions is 20 December.
