What’s your electorate’s best asset? Its people and an abundance of parkland and reserves.

What’s the most pressing law-and-order issue? How do you fix it? Crime is out of control since Daniel Andrews became Premier. According to the independent Crime Statistics Agency crime is up 61.34% in Wheelers Hill, Springvale up 29.6%, Dandenong North up 38.3%. A Guy Government will provide a mobile police station at Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre, where locals are fearful to shop because of violent crime. The truck can then respond to criminal behaviour in the wider area. We have a raft of tough on crime policies including mandatory minimum sentences and strict bail provisions.

What’s your ideal number of poker machines in Greater Dandenong? Labor introduced poker machines in Victoria. There are currently 7.6 pokies for every 1000 adults – a total of 958. I understand that people gamble for different reasons and for some it is a social outing with clear boundaries about what they will bet and knowledge of the odds. For others gambling is a disease and people bet more than they can afford to lose. For local clubs the revenue is used to support the community. I believe in strong education, support and assistance to those addicted to gambling.

Maurice Kirby Velodrome – keep or demolish? I learnt to ride my bike there and was delighted to know Maurie and my family were customers at his bike shop. It is a unique facility and I would be sad to see it go. I understand the shortage of pitches and the thriving growth in soccer. I would hope to see a compromise – a safe area for families to ride and walk. Perhaps rename Parkfield Reserve in Maurie’s honour.

What’s the worst traffic bug-bear in your seat? How will you fix it?

Springvale Road in Mulgrave is one of the most dangerous stretches in Australia. A Guy Government will remove the intersections in 3 key places – the notorious Spaghetti Junction, on Wellington and also Ferntree Gully Roads. This will massively improve travel times and safety for all road users.

Daniel Andrews

Labor

Age: 46

Suburb: Mulgrave

Previous occupations:

I’ve been lucky enough to be the Member for Mulgrave since 2002 and have served as the Minister for Health and the Minister for Consumer Affairs. In 2014 I was given the great gift as Premier of Victoria and I’ve not wasted a moment leading a government that delivers for all Victorians.

What’s your electorate’s best asset?

The great people of Mulgrave. Cath and I decided to start our family here because of the people and I’ve had the great pleasure of making sure every family gets the healthcare they need and the education they deserve, no matter their background.

What’s the most pressing law-and-order issue? How do you fix it?

Family violence. We’ve invested $2.6 billion – more than any Australian state or federal government in history – to combat family violence, and keep women and children safe.

We won’t stop family violence until we change the culture of disrespect that leads to it and I’m proud our government is doing so much to fight this scourge.

What’s your ideal number of poker machines in Greater Dandenong?

We know how insidious problem gambling can be – that’s why we’re freezing pokies numbers across the state, limiting daily cash withdrawals and capping the number of pokies in areas most vulnerable to gambling harm.

Maurice Kirby Velodrome – keep or demolish?

I’m hopeful that Greater Dandenong Council and the local community can find a solution that accommodates all of the different community groups that use Parkfield Reserve.

What’s the worst traffic bug-bear in your seat? How will you fix it?

We’ve already removed the dangerous and congested level crossings in Noble Park, freeing up traffic and creating space to run more trains. But there’s more to do – that’s why we’re widening the Monash between Eastlink and Springvale Road/Warrigal Road, building the Metro Tunnel and starting the Suburban Rail Loop – linking every metropolitan train line across Melbourne.

What’s your electorate’s best asset? Many peoples living in the same community.

What’s the most pressing law-and-order issue? How do you fix it? The best way is to provide the means for parents to train and socialise their cildren.

What’s your ideal number of poker machines in Greater Dandenong? Ideally, none.

Maurice Kirby Velodrome – keep or demolish? I am unfamiliar with this issue.

What’s the worst traffic bug-bear in your seat? How will you fix it? Unavoidable holdups in peak-three-hours.
