DETECTIVES are scouring the ruins of a Dandenong South factory gutted by fire last night.

The blaze started about 12.15am at the steel fabricator, consuming up to 80 per cent of the 450 square-metre factory, a CFA spokeswoman said.

It took up to 35 firefighters and seven trucks nearly an hour to control the blaze, which had visibly warped the factory’s exterior.

Dandenong crime investigation unit detectives inspected the site at 9am this morning, peaking through a roller door with a large hole cut for access by fire crews last night.

Detective Senior Constable Fernando Cartagena said police weren’t yet treating the fire as suspicious.

Anyone with information about the incident can call Dandenong CIU on 9767 7487.
