Carbon fight leader

GREATER Dandenong Council is a leader in its efforts to cut carbon pollution, says Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus.

The council predicts it will cut 450 tonnes of carbon pollution a year through being partners in a co-generation plant in central Dandenong.

The plant in Halpin Way is expected to be built this year. It will produce low-carbon, natural-gas power that can be used by Dandenong businesses, at the same time producing thermal energy.

The plant is expected to save about 360,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over 20 years.

The council has also allocated $490,000 for a trial of energy-efficient street lamps. It is seeking federal funding to extend the program.
