GREATER Dandenong Council is investigating claims that an off-leash dog area in Noble Park is on hazardous ground.

Charlotte Russino lives near the Barry Powell Reserve dog walking area, which is in parts steep, boggy and uneven land in the lower tiers of the reserve.

She says her daughter’s dog Snook was injured after going for a run in the off-leash area. The dog needed surgery costing $1300 to repair ligaments in one leg after hitting a pothole.

Ms Russino, who has once slipped over in the area, said it was more hazardous when the grass was longer.

“The council shouldn’t have released this area before inspecting it. What’s going to happen if a child is playing there and he or she breaks a leg?”

She has advised other dog walkers to particularly avoid the boggiest section in the area’s lowest parts.

Cr Maria Sampey, who raised the matter at a council meeting last Monday week, said she’d been told the grass had grown long because it couldn’t be mown in wet conditions.

Engineering services director Bruce Rendall said the council was aware of the issue and was investigating.
