BACK-PAYMENTS totalling $23,000 for eight food salespeople are among a string of recoveries the Fair Work Ombudsman has secured for workers in Melbourne’s east and south-east suburbs in the past three months.
Fair Work Ombudsman executive director Michael Campbell says the casual salespeople were underpaid the minimum hourly rate as a result of the employer failing to pay them according to the applicable award. A Noble Park retail worker received $9321 back-pay after being underpaid the minimum casual hourly rate and overtime. Mr Campbell says the main reason for the large majority of the underpayments was employers not properly understanding their obligations under workplace laws.
