Push to crack Easter road toll

POLICE will be out in force over Easter as part of Operation Aegis IV – a high-visibility traffic enforcement effort targeting offences such as speeding, drink and drug driving, mobile phone use and failure to wear a seatbelt.
Assistant Commissioner (Traffic and Transit Safety) Ken Lay said police were getting in early this year to deter would be law breakers.
“We’ll have operations in place from Thursday morning on with police saturating the major roads in Melbourne as many people leave to begin their holiday,” he said.
“Fatigue continues to be one of the main contributors to the road toll each year, accounting for around 20 per cent of all fatal collisions,” he said. On highways where we have vehicles travelling at speeds of up to 110km/h, a single lapse of concentration can have devastating consequences.”
