DANDENONG City came out on top in a goal-fest against Kingston City in round six of the State League Division Two South East soccer competition on Saturday.
Playing at Frank Holohan Reserve, Dandenong recovered from a two-goal deficit before half-time to run over the top of Kingston in a quality encounter.
Tom Muretic put Dandenong ahead early on but Kingston hit back three times in a row, all through Pedro Sequeira, and the side threatened to blow the game out.
Dandenong coach Toby Paterson said the goals came, quite surprisingly, from goalkeeper errors.
“We lost a soft goal early on, the goalkeeper made a couple of errors which is quite unlike him,” he said.
“Bad marking for the first one, a soft shot for the second which was conceded, and the goal-keeper dropped the third one.”
With the score sitting at 3-1 as half-time approached, Kevin Townson scored his first for the day to pull the gap back to one at the break.
Dandenong had the run of the play in the second half and Joseph Petruzalek got the breakthrough mid-way through to tie the game.
As full-time neared Dandenong kept pushing and the result finally came, with Townson chipping over the keeper in the dying stages to seal the win.
Paterson was full of praise for his charges after the match.
“We showed great character to come back from 3-1, but the boys were terrific, especially considering it was errors that cost us the goals in the first place, I thought we played really well with great spirit.
“We created lots and lots of chances but the ball just wouldn’t bounce for us.”
In other results, Heatherton United punished Eastern Lions 4-1 at Gardiners Creek Reserve and South Springvale went down to Port Melbourne 3-2 at Warner Reserve.
In State League One action, both Southern Stars and Springvale White Eagles had 1-1 draws, with Frankston and Fawkner respectively.
In State League Three South East, Springvale City drew 1-1 with Waverley and Noble Park United had a 3-1 win against Croydon City.
